September 2010 - Where's My Cellphone

Have you ever misplaced your cellphone? Sometimes I have and need to find it in a hurry as I'm heading out the door or want to get in on a radio contest. Another time I just wanted to test if my call forwarding was working and you can't do that from your own phone so... save time looking for it or asking your friends to call you with this simple web site.

With it's simple screen page and a large area where you just type in your cellphone number, all you do is click "make it ring!". The site will respond with a page that states "Your phone is now ringing. Run, go find it!"

August 2010 - What's your Klout Influence?

Thanks to John Matthews (a new friend attending our weekly "Digital Cafe - Meet the Geek" nights), I was introduced to this sight that has a way of showing you what your influence is on the internet from across various social networking sites

"Klout is the standard for influence. We believe that every individual who creates content has influence. Our goal is to accurately measure that influence and provide context around who a person influences and the specific topics they are most influential on.

Klout tracks the impact of your opinions, links and recommendations across your social graph. We collect data about the content you create, how people interact with that content and the size and composition of your network. From there, we analyze the data to find indicators of influence and then provide you with innovative tools to interact with and interpret the data."

April 2010 - Down for everyone or just me?

Ever wonder if a specific web site is down or not? Is it for real for everyone or is it just you and your computer? Use this website to do a fast check. Of course, if your browser is not working for any website then you won't be able to check, so in that case maybe it is just you (or your internet company).

But many times these days with the amount of traffic on Facebook, Farmville, Hotmail, American Idol, or any hot link, there are times when the website is really truly down and out to the entire world. Take 30 seconds and have downforeveryoneorjustme.com double check for you.

Down for everyone or just me?

December - 2008 Web Warriors

A CBC documentary aired the other day about the dangers of the our world being connected by the internet. The story is called "Web Warriors" and it can be viwed on-line by clicking below.

There is lots to learn about in this 43 minute film, including an interview with the notorious Mafia Boy (Michael Calce), who was only 15 years old when he brought down Yahoo, eBay, CNN and other's web sites.

You'll also meet one computer hacker who journey's to the Russia's cyber underground in hopes of gathering information leading to an arrest in order to claim Microsoft's $250,000 bounty on virus writers.

It's well worth the watch.

November 2008 - Can You Run It?

Ever wondered if that new computer game you want will actually run on your computer. Wl, thanks to the folks at System Requirements Lab, now you can check for that on-line at their website.

Just select a game from the drop-down list, click on the button and their website does the rest. They will show you the results based on both the "Minimum" and "Recommended" system requirements, and even give you some additional information, like the version of your drivers and links to get them updated.

Sept 2008 - Wordle - Beautiful Word Clouds

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends."

Give it a try and create your own!

January 2008 - Listed Wrong

If you love eBay autions (or even if you don't) and you love a good deal (and who doesn't), then this month's recommendation is for you.

LISTEDWRONG.COM

Use this site's search engine to help you find those eBay auctions that have been listed with spelling mistakes. Most people who list on eBay do it right, but every once in a while they do it wrong, and they spell some of the words in their auctions wrong. The regular eBay search engine won't find these items, but listedwrong.com has a database of almost one million misspelled words and can find common misspellings for what you are looking for and then search eBay using those keywords for you.

So, the next time you plan to look for something on eBay's site, make a stop first at listedwrong.com. You just never know when you might find a bargain that most treasure hunters won't be able to find using the traditional eBay search method. You could end up being the only bidder on a one-of-a-kind find. Check it out!

December 2007 - Rumour Has It...

Recently, I have received a rash of e-mails that make claims to certain truths, which are in fact urban myths, legends, hoaxes, scams or scarelore. Some of the classic ones are the Life Is Beautiful virus, or the missing child Ashley Flores, and even the Microsoft/AOL cash giveaway.

The unfortunate thing is that sometimes even the news media will cover it, adding even more credibility to something that is just not true. For example, there was the one warning about drinking bottled water left in a hot car. A reputable FOX affiliates website reported on this warning, and very quickly it spread around as being true, and the e-mails started multiplying as two friends told two friends, and so on.

So, before you forward an e-mail to everyone in your address book because you believe time is of the essence and they MUST know about it, go to SNOPES.COM and check it out for yourself.

Yes, it is true that occasionally one of those e-mails may actually be accurate and providing important information, like the one about the Starbucanneers, an New York City Starbucks outlet that charged 9/11 rescue workers $130 for three cases of water.

The bottom line is, just like the best news journalists have been told by their publishers, check your sources, and avoid egg on your face.

August 2006 - Gmail, reply from any address

Okay, so Gmail is not so new, but it is neat and cool. Here is a feature recently added by Google that has such great functionality that I said GOODBYE! to Outlook forever.

If you are like me and you have several e-mail addresses, you can set your Gmail options to include them in your account so that you can choose to send an e-mail showing that it came from whichever one of your e-mail addresses you want.

If you then set those other e-mail addresses to forward to your Gmail account, combined with this new feature you will now have an all-in-one convenient e-mail handler that is accessible from any computer. This can be done for most POP and IMAP addresses but not for HTTP ones like Hotmail and Yahoo... yet.

Download the Gmail Notifier and you will be notified when you have new messages without having your browser open, including those from your other e-mail addresses that are forwarded to Gmail.

To set this up you must first have a Gmail account. If you don't then you will need an invitation code. You can get one by using your text messaging capable mobile phone or, if you don't have a mobile phone (or use of one), by asking a friend who does have a Gmail account to send you an invitation code.

Log in to your Gmail account, navigate to the settings screen, select the accounts tab and click "Add another email address". You will be sent a confirmation e-mail which you must respond to before you will be able to send an "email as" from Gmail. Once you have done that then it becomes as simple as clicking "Compose Mail" and selecting an e-mail address from the drop down list in the "From:" field.

Many thanks to commandN.tv episode #55 (July 31st, 2006) and their weekly video podcast that brought this techTIP to my attention.

This is just one of the many great features of Gmail that helped it receive the "PC World World Class Award" for being #2 on the list of The 100 Best Products of 2005. Check it out!

March 2006 - Pandora.com

Welcome to the first monthly posting of my

"Site of the Month"

Every week I spend many, many hours surfing the internet for products, news, reviews, events, trends, origins, the history and the future of technology and computing.

Each month I will post a link here to a new, cool, hot, fun, interesting or useful site that I think everyone should check out. Not every site every month will be of interest to everyone, but you never know, so check it out.

I am committed to safe surfing on the internet, so you can trust that any link I post here (or anywhere else in my blogs) is 100% genuine and will not cause any pop-ups, spyware or viruses.

So lets get to this (our first) month's "Site of the Month".

This site answers the question "Can you help me discover more music that I like?" It is a product of the Music Genome Project, "the most comprehensive analysis of music ever".

They have taken the essence of the songs of over 10,000 artists and broken their "DNA" down into hundreds of fundamental "genes", capturing their unique identity.

What does this mean for you? Well, with Pandora you create your own individual "radio" stations, based on the name of an artist or song, and then listen as other songs with a similar melody, harmony and rhythm, or instrumentation, orchestration, and arrangement, or even lyrics, and of course singing and vocal harmony, are played for you.

What you end up with is a discovery process that takes you to new artists, albums and songs that you've never heard before but are likely to enjoy because they share the same musical attributes and qualities. It opens up a whole new world of music. You can't help but think "This is SO COOL!"

For me, I've stopped ripping (copying) my CD's to my computer to playback with the popular music players. I don't need to build playlists anymore and shuffle is a thing of the past.

It really is like having my own personal radio station that plays nothing but the music I like, one song after another, commercial free. I can pause the playback anytime I want, I can skip a song I don't like or don't want to hear, I can rate each song, add them to my favourites, or even post them to my blog.
Try it out! There's a little bit (or a lot) of music loving in all of us, and this is sure to be a treat to your ears.

Please give me (and the other readers here) your feedback on this site-of-the-month. Let us know what you think, what you like (or dislike) and how your experience affected you.

Thanks for reading, and remember - Live it, Live!
