August 2006 - Gmail, reply from any address

Okay, so Gmail is not so new, but it is neat and cool. Here is a feature recently added by Google that has such great functionality that I said GOODBYE! to Outlook forever.

If you are like me and you have several e-mail addresses, you can set your Gmail options to include them in your account so that you can choose to send an e-mail showing that it came from whichever one of your e-mail addresses you want.

If you then set those other e-mail addresses to forward to your Gmail account, combined with this new feature you will now have an all-in-one convenient e-mail handler that is accessible from any computer. This can be done for most POP and IMAP addresses but not for HTTP ones like Hotmail and Yahoo... yet.

Download the Gmail Notifier and you will be notified when you have new messages without having your browser open, including those from your other e-mail addresses that are forwarded to Gmail.

To set this up you must first have a Gmail account. If you don't then you will need an invitation code. You can get one by using your text messaging capable mobile phone or, if you don't have a mobile phone (or use of one), by asking a friend who does have a Gmail account to send you an invitation code.

Log in to your Gmail account, navigate to the settings screen, select the accounts tab and click "Add another email address". You will be sent a confirmation e-mail which you must respond to before you will be able to send an "email as" from Gmail. Once you have done that then it becomes as simple as clicking "Compose Mail" and selecting an e-mail address from the drop down list in the "From:" field.

Many thanks to commandN.tv episode #55 (July 31st, 2006) and their weekly video podcast that brought this techTIP to my attention.

This is just one of the many great features of Gmail that helped it receive the "PC World World Class Award" for being #2 on the list of The 100 Best Products of 2005. Check it out!

Thanks for reading, and remember - Live it, Live!
